Which Type of Braces Is Right for You?
Orthodontia—that word is quite a mouthful, isn't it? Basically, it means correcting a misaligned smile with braces, aligners, or other types of oral appliances. While 80 percent of orthodontic patients are children (starting between ages 10 and 14, according to the American Association of Orthodontists), forward-looking adults explore the health and aesthetic benefits of braces. At Cumberland Park Dental, Dr. Jack Gaffey offers many types of braces to correct a variety of smile issues. One that could be right for you!
What are braces?
Traditionally, braces have been dental appliances composed of bands, archwires, ligatures, headgear, space maintainers, and more. While these tried and true metal, ceramic, or lingual (tongue-side) appliances have helped millions of people have better-looking and healthier smiles, today's dentists offer additional ways to achieve similar results.
At Cumberland Dental, Dr. Gaffey and his team evaluate patients of all ages to understand their smile alignment and bite issues and to compose treatment plans which achieve desired results in a reasonable time frame. Regardless of the type of appliances used, orthodontia gradually moves teeth into more favorable oral positions, correcting:
- Bite problems, or how the top and bottom teeth come together
- Protruding, rotated, tipped, or missing teeth
- Teeth which have shifted position after braces are moved (orthodontic relapse)
Having a well-aligned smile boosts self-esteem and confidence. It also corrects ear and facial pain, jaw joint dysfunction (TMJ), migraines, and more. Plus, straight teeth have fewer cavities, less gum disease, and are easier to brush and floss.
Your choice of braces
Dr. Gaffey will examine your teeth and gums and take special digital imaging and impressions to determine your course of orthodontic treatment. Many teens and older adults opt for two special kinds of orthodontia—Six Month Smiles and Invisalign.
Six Month Smiles deliver straight teeth in just half a year or so. Special tooth-colored bands and wires move the front teeth only, improving smile aesthetics quickly and comfortably. While not appropriate for complex orthodontic issues, Six Month Smiles are a wonderful cosmetic fix that lasts for simpler problems.
Invisalign clear aligners are one of today's most popular orthodontic systems. Custom-made, smooth, and truly discreet, the 18 to 30 pairs of aligners fit over top and bottom teeth. As patients advance through Dr. Gaffey's treatment plan, they change aligner pairs, get monthly progress checks at Cumberland Park Dental, and in the end, have a healthy, beautiful smile. Invisalign treats many mild to moderate bite and alignment problems.
